In this 3-day advanced wearable art workshop, nationally and internationally exhibiting fiber artist Patricia A. Montgomery will instruct participants in traditional African American quilting design and construction techniques to create a circular quilted vest illustrating personal stories. The African American quilt tradition is characterized by vivid color palettes, strong contrasting color combinations, asymmetrical and strip piecing, uneven and large quilting stitches, the use of hidden protective charm symbols, large design elements, appliqued figurative images, and interpretations of Anglo-American traditional patterns. The wide range of styles, design elements, and construction techniques are most often employed to illustrate historical and cultural events of the quilt maker’s life. With Patricia’s guidance, participants will turn their ideas into a one of a kind wearable art vest! Patricia A. Montgomery received her BFA in Fine Art from Holy Names College and her MFA in Fine Art from John F. Kennedy University. She currently lives and creates in Oakland, California. Participants must furnish their own sewing machine and materials. A supply list and workshop prep instructions will be provided by the artist. There will be a one-hour lunch break each day. Participants may bring their own lunch or purchase a boxed lunch at time of registration.
